The Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act of 1998 requires colleges and universities to provide specific levels of security and to report how well they achieve these goals to the public. Parents and students can peruse these statistics, which often influence their college admission choices. Legislation being considered in 2009 will update this act and add new requirements.
